Mini 4WD Beginner's Guide is an unofficial fan site that catalogs Tamiya Mini 4WD kits, chassis and Grade-Up Parts. The builder above starts from the kit on your desk or from a bare chassis, lets you swap in upgrades one slot at a time, and checks the whole car against the race rules as you go.
The chassis decides where the motor sits, whether it takes a single- or double-shaft motor, and which parts fit. Each chassis page lists its specs, stock parts and the kits built on it.
Most first upgrades are rollers, a motor and gears, and several chassis have a starter upgrade set of their own.
Open is Tamiya's official race regulation: use Tamiya parts, stay inside the size limits, and most modifications are allowed. Stock Class is Tamiya's entry-level class, run since 2025. It keeps the Open rules and adds more: no cutting the chassis, no new screw holes and no modifying the parts themselves. B-MAX GP unified its modification rules with Stock Class in December 2025. Before a race, check the rules the organiser publishes.
A double-shaft motor has a shaft at each end and sits in the middle of the chassis, driving the front and rear wheels at once. The PRO chassis (MA, MS and ME) take one. Every other chassis takes a single-shaft motor at the front or the rear. The two do not swap, so know your chassis before you buy a motor. The builder only lists the kind that fits.
Tamiya's rules allow a car at most 105 mm wide, 165 mm long and 70 mm tall, weighing at least 90 g with batteries and motor, on tires 22 to 35 mm in diameter, running on two AA batteries. The builder cannot measure size or weight yet, so it lists those two rules as not checked.
